Who would have thought that at one point we’d all be walking around with little computers in our pockets equipped with camera, ready to take photos with friends and family? Certainly not me.

While smartphones can take photos conveniently to post and share with others, there are certain photos you definitely want taken by a professional and headshots is one of them. Your professional headshot is your digital first impression, the visual handshake that introduces you to the world. As time progresses and your career evolves, it’s crucial to ensure that your headshot reflects the professional you are today.

Here are 7 signs It’s time to update your professional headshot! Did any of these surprise you?

7 Signs You Need a New Headshot

  1. Outdated Aesthetics

We all love looking back at the old photos and reminiscing and even laughing (the big hair and aquanet). However, if your headshot showcases a hairstyle or clothing that’s reminiscent of a bygone era, it’s a clear indicator that it’s time for an update. Keep your image current to reflect the modern and dynamic professional you’ve become. As a bonus, when I offer wardrobe recommendations and support to my headshot clients, I always lean towards classic fashion and looks so your headshot lasts longer.

  1. Career Advancement

As you climb the career ladder, transition into a new role, or achieve a business milestone, your headshot should reflect the current stage of your professional journey. A recent headshot communicates your growth and adaptability, aligning with your career goals.

Professional Headshot that Reflects Your Style

  1. Evolution of Personal Style

Changes in personal style, such as a new haircut, wardrobe, or even a refined makeup routine, can make a significant impact on your overall image. If your headshot doesn’t align with your current style, it might be time for a makeover. I recently had a headshot client who didn’t wear glasses for his headshot because the photographer told him not to, but glasses are part of who he is! It’s important your headshots accurately reflect you.

  1. Shift in Branding or Company Image:

If your company has undergone rebranding or there’s been a shift in its overall image, it’s important to update your headshot to maintain alignment. Consistency in branding, both personal and corporate, reinforces your professional identity. If you’re a business owner, your headshot should reflect the image you’re trying to portray. As I said above, your headshot is your first impression!

  1. It’s a Selfie or a Friend Took it

Investing in a professional headshot is an investment in your personal brand. I totally understand that those early in their career or business might not be able to afford a professional headshot. You took your best selfie or had a friend snap a decent photo. But, now you’re grown in your career and business, it’s time to invest in yourself with a professional headshot. High-quality, professionally taken headshots convey competence and attention to detail, while cell phone snapshots may inadvertently diminish your professional credibility. Don’t forget – it’s also a great business tax write-off!

  1. Online Presence:

In today’s digital age, your online presence is often the first point of contact for potential employers, clients, or collaborators. An outdated headshot can send the wrong message, while a current and professional image enhances your online credibility.

  1. You Just Don’t Like it

Here’s the truth: if you don’t like your current headshot, then it’s time for a new one! You deserve a professional that you love that looks and feels like you. Maybe your style has changed, maybe you just don’t like your expression. My stress-free headshot process ensures that you leave the studio feeling excited about your headshot. Leading up to your headshot, I’ll offer wardrobe and styling guidance so you can confidently choose what to wear for the session. You’ll pop into the studio for an efficient and thorough headshot experience. You won’t feel rushed, but you’ll be in and out and on your way back to your busy schedule.

Why You Don’t Want an AI Headshot

With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, there’s been a trend of using AI headshots. All a user has to do is upload a random phone image of themselves, and the technology will generate headshots for you. Of course, as a photographer, I don’t recommend doing this, but there is a reason legal reason as to why.

Mostly privacy and usage by the AI companies/app for unlimited use of those, typically proprietary images. And, the US copyright office is not allowing AI images to be copyrighted either. So if a company or a solopreneur wants to ensure their staff and images are used only by them, you need a photographer. Using AI headshots means that their images could be unknowingly agreed to be used by the app for monetary gain forever!
