Watermelon Birthday Smash | Southington, CT

Hailey’s Mom contacted me in early December about planning a first birthday cake smash for her daughter for the beginning of January…or so we thought! We decided on a boho theme based on the pretty dress Mom had picked out for her session which went together perfectly! We knew that there were food allergies present and Mom had coordinated to have a cake made for the photoshoot that was safe. BUT we hit a snag with the cake about 2 days before the session, which happened to be right after New Year’s Day! So with some quick thinking, I ended up going out to purchase a watermelon figuring that not only is it another developmentally appropriate food for one year old babies (have to be mindful of what can be a choking hazard!), it would go with the boho theme AND just happened to be one of her favorite fruits – we were back on schedule! Our watermelon birthday smash was a HIT with baby Hailey! She loved picking up all the different slices I had cut up for her just to try each and every one! It was hilarious to watch her go from slice to slice of watermelon while sitting in my Newington, CT photography studio. After plenty of watermelon, it was time for a bath just to get some of that sticky fruit off. She had a blast playing with my sponges and splashing around in the bubbly, warm water. I just loved planning this special set up for her, and it’s a great reminder to parents that food allergies are serious – but it doesn’t mean we can’t make special arrangement to make sure your child has just as fun and special of a first birthday photoshoot as anyone else!
